What will you be doing in 5 years time?
Whatever it is for you, I wonder how long you've assumed that this would happen?
Very often we have a dream that we expect to fulfill in the future.
'When the kids leave home I'm going to go on a world cruise'.
'Once I've paid off the mortgage I'm going to retire.'
'Once I've got my college degree, I'm going to park it for the future and go and work in a donkey sanctuary.'
We can have a dream that we originally aspired to in our teens that didn’t get fulfilled when we thought it would.
At any point we may discover something that we would love to do, have or be, and imagine that we will do it at some point in the future.
When there is something that you want to do that you don't start aiming towards now, you have to ask yourself why.
What is your 'why'?
What is it that’s stopping you working towards that goal now?
One very common reason is lack of time.
...but is that really the reason?
If your boiler broke down you'd find time to get it fixed.
If your business or your job required that you take certain exams in order to continue as you are or move onto the next step, you would find time for it. This may involve a significant amount of time either in the short or long term but either way you would find the time for it.
So to imagine that lack of time is the reason you aren’t already working towards your goal is possibly not the whole story.
Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate that time is a massive factor in everything that we do.
Time however isn't so much about how much of it we have, but about what we do with it.
How we organise it.
How we handle it.
And very often, how we perceive it.
(That last one is another topic all of its own!)
So what’s the reason that you don’t make a start on working towards your dream?
There are a few possibilities:
- That you are worried about not succeeding at it.
- You can’t be bothered to put in the time and effort required to achieve it.
- You don’t know how to go about it.
- It’s the wrong dream.
Indeed sometimes we can worry that the achievement of our dream will have a negative effect on other areas of our lives.
I can remember when the National Lottery first came out.
I used to buy my ticket every week and we’d all stand in the pub waiting to hear the results.
Had we won £1,000,000??!!
Half of me would be excited at the prospect but the other half would be praying on the inside that we wouldn’t win.
My life was so great that I didn’t want it turned on its head.
It couldn’t have got any better and so I didn’t want it ‘ruined’ with tons of money.
That was a slightly different situation to what we're talking about here as I couldn’t influence whether I won or not (short of not buying a ticket of course).
Would your dream change areas of your life that you’d prefer to stay the same?
Think about this as it could well be something that’s holding you back.
“If I get that dream job, it will take me away from home more and my partner would hate that.”
You getting your dream job may make you worry that it would cause problems in your relationship.
The result being that you wouldn’t even go for the job if the opportunity arose.
Maybe it’s the wrong dream.
You’ve dreamed of being something since you were little and still hanker after it whilst you sit at your desk processing insurance claims.
But is that still a real ambition?
If you had the opportunity, would you really still want to do that?
Maybe it’s been a dream so long that you don’t realise that you no longer want it.
Whatever your dream is,
think about it!
...and whatever your reason for not taking steps towards it,
think about it!
If you want to achieve something, make a plan and take the first step.
I do understand that it isn’t always as easy as 1,2,3, but the starting point has to be somewhere.
If you need any help then you know where I am but otherwise I wish you all the best with it and look forward to hearing your exciting stories!
