Now here we are well into the new year.
How are the resolutions going?
How many have you broken already?
If you have broken them, don’t be disheartened.
Very often we can jump into these things and expect too much of ourselves.
Let’s say your resolution was to get fit this year.
You haven’t joined the gym yet and haven’t started your three classes a week and lengths of the pool.
Be a bit more gentle on yourself.
If you’re going from doing no exercise whatsoever, how about starting with a ten minute walk around the block every morning.
Then increase this by five minutes every day.
In doing that, firstly you are doing something and so will be feeling good about that.
Secondly it’s in easy chunks so it’s not going to be overwhelming.
Thirdly you’ll be getting fitter every day. You’ll soon be thinking, actually, I’m ready to join the gym now. You’ll be fitter and ready to do it. You can enjoy it and it will be something that you’ll stick at.
Let’s say that your resolution was to lose weight. Again, rather than think you can go from eating everything in sight to going to 1500 calories per day, which is a big jump, take an easier way.
Week 1, say that you’re going to cut our crisps and chocolate or whatever your thing is.
The second week, don’t eat between your three meals a day. The third week, look at the content of the meals.
In the fourth week control the portions.
Whichever way you work, doing it in small stages, within a month you’ll be eating the healthy diet that you wanted to be on. It will have been an easier transition.
So whatever your resolution may be; to be more social, to be more confident, whatever it is, do it in stages so that it doesn’t overwhelm you which is what causes us to give up on these things.
